Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson             Camden

Jackie Robinson was the first black person to play professional baseball. I chose to write about him because I love sports and I think he was very courageous.

Born in Cario, GA, Jackie Robinson lived in Georgia until his mother moved them to California.  Jackie's father left when he was 6 months old, and never saw him again.  Jackie’s mother moved to CA for a better opportunity for her children.

As an adult, Jackie Robinson and his wife helped Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fight for equal rights.  Jackie believed that black men should be able to play sports with white men.  He decided to play baseball in the big leagues.  He started out on the Montreal Royals, and eventually he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers as the first black man on the team!  He faced booing, threatening letters, and angry mobs who didn’t think that he should play with whites.  He still played, and people started to like him!  Because of what he did, sports started to be more and more equal.  50 years after he began playing (after his death) he was honored by having his number, 42, retired.

I think that Jackie Robinson was a hero.  I honor him because he was fearless, and opened the doors for equal rights in sports.  Today, our sports teams have both blacks and whites playing together, and Jackie Robinson made that happen.
